If you have been online for any amount of time, you have most likely heard the term “No prep” paint. Who would love to have no prep?! Ummm me! Unfortunately, if you’d like your piece to turn out as expected and not take steps backwards, prep is necessary…. even if it just means simply wiping down the piece you are planning on painting.

Below, I’ll share with you the steps I take to prepping each piece of furniture. Realistically, prepping doesn’t take much time and in the end, you’ll find it’s well worth the effort in avoiding pealing paint, bleed through, dirt, etc.

To Prep:

  1. Remove all hardware
  2. Sweep out/vacuum inside
  3. Wipe the entire piece down with an All Purpose Cleaner. I use Simple Green.
  4. Clean with TSP/Deglosser (or a TSP substitute).
  5. Wipe down with a 50:50 ratio of Denatured Alcohol/Water (to remove the TPS residue).
If I strip a piece, I’ll just strip then prep with water and Mineral Spirits.
  6. Sand/scuff with 120 grit sanding sponge or sand paper after it dries. I use the 3M Sanding Sponges.
  7. Remove any dust from sanding

We will talk about priming in another post! Stay tuned!

Happy painting!
