Frame Repair Technique (when painting a piece)

When working on older pieces, I tend to come across a lot of broken components, including parts of the show wood. Here’s a technique I use regularly when painting a piece. If you’re staining/refinishing a piece, instead of using Bondo, wood epoxy putty works well.

The small screws are placed into the frame to give the bondo something to hold onto. Mix and shape the bondo onto the frame. Then when the bondo sets up, sand it to shape.

You might need to do this more than once to get the shape you want. Then prime and paint as normal. You can also do this with wood epoxy putty (I like Mohawk products) if you’re refinishing instead of painting, just pick a color coordinating epoxy color to match your stain.
