Have you tried a metallic patina finish? I have to admit, I LOVE patina. When we finally got around to renovating our kitchen, my biggest request was a copper sink. While it’s not for everyone, the green patina just speaks to my soul.
Modern Masters has a few different metal paint finishes but the copper and bronze with the green and blue patina are my favorite.
This finish is not only fun to create, but incredibly easy! It’s great on anything from candlesticks to mason jars to large pieces of furniture.
I found a pair of candle sticks with some neat detailing at the thrift store for $1 each, and prepped them to paint. If you missed the post on how I prep my furniture pieces, you can find it HERE. For this piece, I removed the old wax, cleaned it and scuffed it with a sanding pad. If you’re using this finish on a piece of furniture, primer is recommended.
Next, I put on the first coat of paint and let it dry. Don’t worry too much about getting full coverage on the first coat. Like with my furniture pieces, I usually end up doing 1 1/2 coats. The 1/2 coat is the first coat which gives the second coat something to bond with, then your second coat is where you go for the full coverage.
Let the first coat dry, then paint on the second coat. This is where the magic happens! After you finish painting on the second coat, take the bottle of Green Patina Aging Solution and either brush or spray it on your piece while the second coat of paint is still wet. While the paint dries, the patina will begin to work its magic. It’ll take about 30 minutes to an hour to begin to see the full effect but when it’s done, it’ll look like this!
To finish it, I sprayed the piece with clear coat and voila! Here are a couple of Mason jars I did as well. The one on the left has the copper paint with the green patina and the one on the right is the bronze with the blue patina.
